And I'll still have my old machine with 64gb ram to actually run sims and do whatever else requires lots of ram. So for the same price, roughly, as a decent external GPU, I'm willing to roll the dice. Other GPU applications & Out-of-VRAM Redshift is not the only application using the GPU Programs like Photoshop, Mudbox and Nuke can use considerable amounts of VRAM, if certain GPU-acceleration features are enabled and used. I'm definitely feeling sketched out by the fact that it can only take 16gb ram, but being able to do GPU renders with redshift is literally my single issue that I need to address, I'm not going to be using terribly heavy scenes. On Maya, Redshift recommends avoiding Viewport 2.0 as it can use significant amounts of memory. I assume it's going to be way faster than running CPU renders on my old intel machine no matter what. Maxon announced the immediate availability of Redshift for macOS including support for M1-powered Macs as well as Apple’s Metal Graphics API.

It goes from interface problems with not recognizing inputs over massive memory overflow to recurring freezes of cinema using the redshift RenderView with bigger scenes.

I'm updating from an intel mac pro with two AMD firepro d300 cards, which cannot run redshift at all, so anything should be better than nothing right? I don't even really care about how fast the renders are, I just need to use redshift to work with files from a client that's big enough to make it worth spending $1000 to be able to do the job. Hi Cinema folks, I use a maxed out Apple Mac Studio with an M1 Ultra for some time now and I notice more and more problems with Cinema 4D and specially with Redshift.

The thing is, this computer is in the mail to me today, whereas I was on a 4-6 week wait list for an RTX card PC system from puget systems or HP z series, which were also looking at $4-5k base prices.

If it sucks I'll send it back, either way I'll update once i get it. Considering the whole thing costs less than some video cards at about $1000, I'm cautiously optimistic. I've found a few other places that have tested it with similar results. This is at least a step in the right direction though, best of luck man! But I'm sure in the coming days and weeks we'll start seeing performance benchmarking with the new MacOS enabled Redshift and that should help you make your decision. I was honestly hoping to see openCL support that might help ease the bottleneck of trying to procure scalped Nvidia GPUs a bit, but no such luck, I know Octane has a version that runs in Metal now so that might be worth looking into, but even so, the performance numbers for that one simply arent an improvement over their PC counterpart to justify going the OSX route vs PC for heavy gpu 3D workflows yet. Redshift is Maxon’s powerful production renderer and integrates tightly with Cinema 4D in the viewport. Also, the M1 chipset is an amazing architecture, but its primarily focused for low energy consumption type devices, meaning its not really geared to compete against threadrippers or 3090s or anything, so depending on what you're upgrading from, you may not see a substantial performance gain in Redshift specifically compared against a hackintosh running 2080tis but maybe in other workflows it might be a boost.

If you have feedback on the subreddit theme, feel free to send /u/Cryptonaut a message.I haven't run it myself but I would suggest to also be mindful of the performance differences of an M1 setup compared against a typical CG workstation, while the MacOS support is an absolutely spectacular step in the right direction, there still isnt support for Nvidia chipsets which by and large drive the GPU rendering market. Im looking to upgrade my old Mac Pro (2013) to either the Mac Studio M1 Max or a Macbook Pro M1 Max 16'. The traffic stats for /r/Cinema4D are also publically available.
